How to Care for an Olive Wood Cutting Board: Complete Guide

October 13, 2026 · By Lonivera

Learn how to clean, oil, and maintain your handcrafted olive wood cutting board to preserve its natural grain and ensure it lasts for generations.

Handcrafted olive wood is celebrated for its dense grain, natural antibacterial properties, and timeless elegance. With proper care, your wooden kitchenware will not only stay durable but also develop a rich, stunning patina over time.

1. Hand Wash Only (Never Use a Dishwasher) Always clean your olive wood cutting board by hand using warm water and a drop of mild dish soap. Use a soft sponge to remove food residues gently.

  • Never soak the board in water or leave it submerged in the sink.
  • Never place it in the dishwasher, as extreme heat and moisture can cause warping or cracking.

2. Dry Immediately and Completely After washing, immediately wipe the board thoroughly with a dry, clean cotton towel. Allow it to air-dry standing upright in an open space so air circulates evenly around both sides.

3. Oil and Condition Periodically Wood requires hydration to keep its rich tones and avoid drying out. Every 3 to 4 weeks (or whenever the surface starts looking dry and pale):

  • Apply a few drops of food-grade mineral oil or natural beeswax conditioning balm.
  • Massage the oil into the wood fibers using a circular motion with a lint-free cloth.
  • Let the board absorb the oil overnight, then buff off any excess the following morning.

4. Eliminate Odors Naturally If your cutting board absorbs garlic, onion, or strong food odors, sprinkle coarse sea salt over the surface and rub it thoroughly using half a fresh lemon. Rinse with lukewarm water and dry immediately.
